What’s Research gotto do with teaching anyways??
Now a days its almost mandatory for College teachers to have a Ph.D., without which even your survival in the hallowed halls of university teaching would be impossible…now what I don’t understand is the correlation between research & teaching…as far as I think, the qualities which make a good teacher are –
~Ability to simplify complex concepts & explain them lucidly
~Ability & willingness to be a friend, philosopher & guide to the student
Now where does research figure in any of the above??…A person can be knowledgeable without research too…& in my experience most researchers lose interest in classroom teaching & in fact are very bad teachers, their mind being preoccupied by their research…& especially looking at the poor quality of Ph.D. & research being conducted by most faculties, the insistence on Ph.D. for teaching is very silly…on one had everyone complains of dearth of good teachers in colleges & esp B-schools but on the other hand the system by focusing on research as a major qualification for teaching is adding to the problem. On an unrelated note why are Ph.Ds called Doctor XYZ in India instead of being referred to as Ms XYZ, Ph.D.?
Heck even God Never Received a PhD
~ He had only one major publication.
~It was in Hebrew.
~ It had no references.
~ It wasn’t published in a refereed journal.
~ It may be true that he created the world, but what has he done since then?
~His cooperative efforts have been quite limited.
~The scientific community has had a hard time replicating his results.
~ He never applied to the ethics board for permission to use human subjects.
~ His office hours were infrequent and usually held on a mountain top.
~ No record of working well with colleagues.
